IT Assistant




The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.

As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Social Journalism.

Students are taught by veteran reporters and editors and learn by doing in the media capital of the world. A required paid summer internship gives our master’s students a head start when they look for jobs.

The IT Assistant, Level 3 will report to the IT Senior Associate.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees and troubleshoots the daily performance of equipment checkout operations and associated end-user curriculum and classroom support, including inspecting and discharging equipment, maintaining and updating data in an automated circulation system, and front-end user support;

  • Answers user inquiries regarding relevant equipment and systems for technical assistance or information and assists with routine AV/IT troubleshooting calls, questions, and initiatives;

  • Maintains records of daily data communication transactions, problems and actions taken, and other associated activities;

  • Proactively troubleshoots, assesses (tests), and coordinates the repair of checkout equipment and system repair as needed;

  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with other J-School departments and IT units for effective policy and procedure implementation and compliance;

  • Provides support to AV/IT Services as needed, conducting classroom walkthroughs, assisting with media wall routing, and communicating with other J-School departments and IT units to route AV requests to proper technical staff; and

  • Assists in researching recording and classroom AV/IT equipment, developing specifications, and communicating with stakeholders and vendors;

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

  2. A minimum of six months of full-time experience in a computer or technology-related position. Experience that is more than 20 hours per week and less than 35 hours per week may be counted at 50% of the requirement (i.e., two months of part time experience equal to one month full time experience)

  3. Additional experience and/or education that can be met by ONE of the following: An additional three years and six months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; an Associate's degree plus 18 months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

  4. Demonstrated English Language proficiency

  5. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This title has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.


A preferred candidate should have:

  • Two (2) years of hands-on experience in working with digital video, photography and audio equipment, as well as familiarity with lighting.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to remain detail-oriented.

  • Working knowledge of current audio, video and web conferencing technologies.

  • Familiarity with Mac hardware and Mac OS X.

  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.


New hire: $59,713*

Incumbent: $67,473

  • This amount reflects 13% of salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment only
