The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.

As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Engagement Journalism.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Research and Development Associate will work on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift donors. They willimplement and execute a moves management system to track progress.

The incumbent will work with the Executive Director of Development in building the infrastructure of several mini campaigns, including Giving Tuesday, and assisting with all prospect and donor strategies.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages the institutional funders portfolio, including tracking and meeting all deadlines as well as partnering across the school to provide compelling pitches for support and accurate reports;

  • Collaborates with the Executive Director in the creation and execution of an events strategy that includes fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship events andpreparation for meetings with major gift donors and institutional funders;

  • Works closely with administrative and academic leadership to draft proposals for funding to individual donors and institutional funders;

  • Prepares in-depth research profiles and prospect identification materials;

  • Serves as the point person at the school for development policies on gifts; processes all contributions in Raiser’s Edge.

  • Serves as the department liaison with key departments, including external relations, finance, public safety, student affairs, admissions, alumni relations, and facilities;

  • Writes all solicitation letters, acknowledgement letters, and other collateralmaterials in a timely manner;

  • Manages Foundation Board meetings and conducting all pre- and post-communication, including drafting meeting minutes;

  • Collaborates with the Finance department to ensure that fundraising numbers are reconciled and prepare financial reports using Raiser’s Edge; prepares department budgets, implementing fundraising best practice

  • Works closely with the Finance department and Admissions on the scholarship allocation process and matching process; assists with the annual scholarship stewardship process;

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 uponcommencing employment. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least twoweeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must befully vaccinated as of their first day of employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to thisrequirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law.

Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office. All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus.


Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required.


  • Five years of related experience in higher education.

  • Experience assisting in the development of cultivation and solicitation strategies for major gift donors.

  • Experience working with institutional funders and drafting grant submissions.

  • Experience working with enrollment management teams to ensure that students are matched with the appropriate scholarships

  • Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce, iWave, FoundationSearch; advanced Microsoft Office skills.

  • Excellent research, writing, planning, organizational, and financial skills; strong follow-through; high-level analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects as priorities change, with an exceptional eye for detail and accuracy and focus on meeting all deadlines and performance goals.

  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for journalism education.

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.


Plans and manages College fundraising strategy and operations.

  • Implements and monitors comprehensive resource development program; makes recommendations to improve department policies and procedures

  • Fulfills specific goals and targets based on individual portfolio

  • Assists Director with developing funding strategies and assessing outcomes

  • Oversees annual and/or major gift activities to support strategic plan

  • Maintains relationships with donors and sponsoring organizations to cultivate and maintain funding

  • Prepares financial reports for management; may write grant proposals

  • May manage professional and/or clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
